After completing her PhD in Olfactory Neuroscience in Barcelona, Elie Fink, our founder, returned to Ghana to conduct research. During that time, she noticed the abundance of tropical almonds, known locally as "Abrofo Nkatie." Despite their cultural familiarity and rich nutritional value, these nuts were still largely overlooked as a food source.

“I had seen people cracking the nuts and eating them all the time as a child,” Elie recalls. “And yet, they were still overlooked.” This observation sparked a bigger idea. Elie began to imagine a different kind of food system—one where native and naturalised crops like tropical almonds could be locally processed, widely consumed, and economically empowering for communities across Ghana and West Africa.

A LOCAL CROP WITH GLOBAL POTENTIAL

Ghana’s agricultural economy has long been shaped by a few dominant crops. Globally, just 15 plant species provide 90 percent of the world’s food, and more than 60 percent of that comes from only three: rice, wheat, and maize. This lack of crop diversity makes our global food system fragile and deeply vulnerable to climate change.

Talmond was built in response to that reality. It began with a belief in the potential of forgotten super crops that can nourish people, restore ecosystems, and preserve local culture. Along the way, Elie also rediscovered fonio, an ancient grain deeply valued by generations before us.

Together, tropical almonds and fonio became the foundation for Talmond’s mission. These crops are climate-resilient, nutrient-rich, and deeply rooted in West African food heritage. They represent the possibility of a better food future, one shaped by local crops, local knowledge, and thriving local communities.

WHAT WE MAKE

Talmond products
Talmond products

Tropical almonds: Talmond already produces the world’s first tropical almond milk. It is a plant-based alternative made entirely from tropical almonds grown in Ghana. Our products are small-batch and proudly made in close collaboration with local harvesters, and women-led processing teams.

The process is simple but deeply intentional.

  • Tropical almonds are collected manually after they fall from the trees.

  • They are sun-dried, cracked using custom-built machines, and processed into milk.

  • We bottle the milk in returnable glass to reduce waste and support a circular economy.

We have already piloted distribution in select shops across Ghana . These early steps show that our vision is both locally rooted and globally relevant.

Fonio: Talmond is also soon launching the world’s first fonio milk. Also, a plant-based alternative made entirely from fonio grains cultivated in Ghana and Togo. This product was developed in many iterative steps and close collaboration with international engineers, with successful completion of pilot UHT trials marking the next phase of international market entry.

We have already piloted distribution of the fonio grains and flour in select fairtrade shops in Switzerland.

WHY IT MATTERS

When you support Talmond, you are helping to build a food system that is regenerative, inclusive, and led by West African communities.

To date, we have:

  • Sourced fonio from over 1,000 women fonio producers.

  • Partnered with 1,000 smallholder farmers and on course to planting over 80,000 tropical almond trees across 500ha in farming communities.

  • Created dignified employment in rural areas.

WHAT'S NEXT

This month of May, we are launching Talmond’s first-ever crowdfunding campaign. It is an invitation to help grow a movement. We are offering a profit-sharing investment opportunity for people who believe in the future we are building. It’s a chance to become part of the journey, grow with us, and share in the dividends of our success.

The funds raised will be used to:

  • Scale production of our tropical almond products.

  • Expand our distribution networks in key markets.

  • Support sustainable farming initiatives that empower local farmers.

  • Invest in R&D for new product innovations.

  • Strengthen our digital presence and customer experience.

We are looking for early supporters who care about:

  • Climate-smart African agriculture.

  • Women-led innovation and community resilience.

  • Transparent, sustainable food systems.

  • Regenerative products that honour local culture.

This is a limited opportunity with only a small number of early supporter seats available. We want every investor to feel like a meaningful part of the Talmond story.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

This campaign marks a new chapter for Talmond. It is an opportunity to scale our impact while staying rooted in the communities and values that shaped us. Invest in Talmond today to be part of the first cycle of investors bringing the goodness of fonio and tropical almond to the world. Thank you for being here. The future of food is already growing, and we would be honoured to grow it with you.
